A Witch Hunt
The premiere
The ballet was created based on the story of Anna Göldi, subjected to brutal tortures and executed in XVIII century Switzerland for witchcraft. The choreography is accompanied by baroque music, including pieces from Four Seasons of Vivaldi, as well as dramatic text.
Annamiggeli Tschudi died in 1810, probably in the Polish part of Ukraine, far away from her home town Glarus in Switzerland where she was kind of famous: when she was eight years old, a maid employed in her family home Anna Göldi allegedly cast a spell on her. When one day in her glass with milk there were found needles and nails, Göldi was concluded to have put them there with evil intentions. Göldi was immediately sent away, however soon after Annamiggeli started vomiting needles and limping. Convinced that Göldi used witchcraft to get her revenge, a search party was sent after her, she was brought back to Glarus and made to "heal" Annamiggeli - while at the same time proving her guilty. Annamiggeli has actually recovered a bit, and thus Göldi was subjected to tortures and executed.
Who is guilty and who is innocent in this horrible story? Who has sinned against whom? Do the living - have the right to judge the dead?
The premiere enchanted the audience, who had watched the show in incredible suspense which they later let out in a long standing ovation.
~Gazeta Wyborcza
The duet of Anna Göldi and doctor Tschudi was particularly sensual, with fluent rises and moments of powerful closeness which could really undermine the peace of any home.
